The Production of Magnetically Dominated Star Forming Regions

چکیده
We consider the dynamical evolution of an interstellar cloud that is initially in thermal equilibrium in the warm phase and is then subjected to a sudden increase in the pressure of its surroundings. We find that if the initial plasma β of the cloud is of order unity, then there is a considerable period during which the material in the cloud both has a small β and is in the thermally unstable temperature range. These conditions are not only consistent with observations of star forming regions, but are also ideally suited to the production of density inhomogeneities by magnetohydrodynamic waves. The end result should be a cloud whose size and average density are typical of Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) and which contains denser regions whose densities are in the range inferred for the translucent clumps in GMCs. Star Formation: Lessons from Taurus
The Taurus molecular cloud complex is the paradigm for quiescent, low-density, isolated star formation. Yet the age distribution of its stellar population indicates that star formation is a rapid and dynamic process, inconsistent with the old picture of magnetically-controlled protostel-lar cloud collapse. Instead, Taurus seems to have formed stars in a manner qualitatively consistent with the ...
متن کاملQuiescent Cores and the Efficiency of Turbulence-accelerated, Magnetically Regulated Star Formation
The efficiency of star formation, defined as the ratio of the stellar to total (gas and stellar) mass, is observed to vary from a few percent in regions of dispersed star formation to about a third in clusterforming cores. This difference may reflect the relative importance of magnetic fields and turbulence in controlling star formation. We investigate the interplay between supersonic turbulenc...
متن کاملA Study of the Distribution of Star-Forming Regions in Luminous Infrared Galaxies by Means of Hα Imaging Observations
We performed Hα imaging observations of 22 luminous infrared galaxies to investigate how the distribution of star-forming regions in these galaxies is related to galaxy interactions. Based on correlation diagrams between Hα flux and continuum emission for individual galaxies, a sequence for the distribution of star-forming regions was found: very compact (∼ 100 pc) nuclear starbursts with almos...
متن کاملFree-free and recombination radiation from massive star-forming regions
The contribution of free-free and recombination radiation to the IR emission from regions of massive star formation is investigated. A method for calculating Gaunt factors for free-free emission from a hydrogenic non-relativistic gas is employed and the results are compared with approximation formula from the literature. While the cooling of ionized star forming regions due to free-free and fre...
متن کاملStorm enhanced density: magnetic conjugacy effects
In the early phases of a geomagnetic storm, the low and mid-latitude ionosphere are greatly perturbed. Large SAPS electric fields map earthward from the perturbed ring current overlapping and eroding the outer plasmasphere and mid-latitude ionosphere, drawing out extended plumes of storm enhanced density (SED). We use combined satellite and ground-based observations to investigate the degree of...
